Jai Alai/Cesta Punta--2016 Dania Team Jai Alai Competition, from beginning to end

Dania Jai Alai began its Team Jai Alai competition on the weekend of October 7 (Evening) and 8 (Matinee and Evening). The competition ended on the weekend of December 9 (Evening) and 10 (Matinee and Evening).  The teams were all from the Dania roster but represented Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, and Dania Beach. 30 games were played each weekend. A win was worth 5 points, place was worth 3 points, and show was worth 1 point. At the end of the competition cash prizes were given. The running team standings and individual points contributed statistics are given below. Note that individual points obviously add to more than team totals because doubles points are counted twice. I made no attempt to identify singles victories. I also made no attempt to note how many games each player participated in, what the post positions were, or who the doubles partners were. In this competition, for the most part, pairs stayed the same throughout a performance. It was unknown if the captains had any control over the pairings. The variables I have left out are all in the entries and results pages for the three performances, if you want to find out. Corrections for any errors you may find will be welcomed and changes made. I took this competition seriously because I think there is much hidden information about the roster to be found in it. Money does talk.

Singles games are 1,4,7,10, all doubles games to 7 pts except G9, which is to 9 pts:

Summary Week10 (Final): December 9-10, 3 performances: Friday Dec. 9 (Evening); Saturday Dec. 10 (Matinee), Saturday Dec. 10 (Evening)

Team: Hollywood dominated the final two performances of the 10th and final week and won the team tournament in smashing fashion. The 10th week was played for double points (W=10, P=6, S=2) in order to spice up the competition and give Fort Lauderdale and Dania Beach a chance to get back into the race. The schedule was set up so that FL would have a 1 post advantage over Hollywood in the Friday night performance and the top two teams would  have equal posts in the Saturday Matinee. Hollywood would get its 1 post advantage on Saturday evening. Here is the actual scoring, game by game. Hollywood went into this week leading by 57 points. After each game, the size of the lead is given (rather than the actual score, because, like cricket, when the scores are this high it is easier and more informative to only give the difference).

Led by Foronda's 3 wins Fort Lauderdale used their 1 post advantage over Hollywood to roar back into contention Friday night. They outscored Hollywood in 8 of the 10 games. This made the Saturday Matinee (both teams at equal post strength) crucial. FL needed to win big and get a cushion for the Evening performance where they would be at a 1 post disadvantage. They were holding their own in the early games. Then the Hollywood hammer came down. They added 46 points to their lead in the last 5 games. G8 and G10 were emphatic shutouts that basically won the tournament. The two shutouts shared an unlikely scenario. Diego, Hollywood's captain, had crucial service faults in each. In G8 he was serving possible game point (with Chasio) to Aimar-Urturan. The fault handed Hollywood's fate to A-U, who proceeded to win. D-C finished 2nd and Arrieta-Ibon 3rd. In G10 Diego faulted earlier, giving the baton to Aimar, who cruised until he met Arrieta. In one of the best points of the entire weekend, Arrieta prevailed. He won the game. Aimar finished 2nd. In a playoff for 3rd against Zulaika (DB-c), Diego served an ace to sweep the game for Hollywood. Hollywood completely dominated the Evening performance, winning 4 of the first 5 games. In a very fitting way to end the competition Aimar-Salegi, Hollywood's top front and back court total scorers won game 5, all but clinching the championship. In the final 15 games, Hollywood lost ground to FL twice. Dania Beach ended a disappointing campaign in last place, a little short of 200 points behind Hollywood.

Individual: Minte (FL-b) led all scorers this week with 70 points. Arrieta (H-f) was 2nd with 66. Erik (FL-f-c) won the overall scoring title with 284 points. Salegi (H-b), the surprise of the tournament, led the back court with 217. Hollywood's front court trio of Aimar (234), Arrieta (209), and Diego (c) (190), along with Salegi, played a major part in their championship. No other team had more than one player with 200 points. Eric dominated the tournament until he finally slowed down toward the close. In the end, too little support from the rest of his front court was too much for FL to overcome. Though it came in a disappointing context, Zulaika's (DB-f-c) 39 point (including 5 wins in the Saturday Evening performance) Week 8, was the best single performance of the tournament. If I was to name a most valuable player, it would be Salegi. Week after week, especially in the later weeks, he helped set the tone for his team's performance by his excellent, hustling play in the early games. A great image is that of him winning one of his last games with a falling rebote from the apron. Neither Egiguren nor Olharan could have done it better.

INDIVDUAL

Players key: W=wins:5pts; P=place:3pts; S=Show:1pt; DNP=Did not play

Note 1: DNP, throughout the tournament meant either scratched or not scheduled. Not scheduled meant exactly what it said or out due to injury. I made no distinction between any of the possibilities. Scratched most likely, but not necessarily, meant injured. See Dania Beach scratch sheets (which cover, at this time, Nov. 1 on). Note Tiger's caveat on the scratch sheets.

Note 2: Points were doubled in Week 10.

Note 3: Use these individual statistics as a point of departure, perhaps no more than an impression.  There are likely to be errors in them. The errors could be errors of addition, which are easy to fix, or errors in assignment of points, which are not so easy to fix. I went through the results pages each week in order to compile the points. If you try going through the Dania results pages, you'll see how easy it is to pull up the wrong date, or compile for evenings when you meant to be compiling for matinees because when you hit the results on the date, you sometimes get the matinee and sometimes the evening, seemingly at random. Occasionally the slickness of design of  Dania's web pages gets in the way of providing simple, easy to access information. That said, all errors are my responsibility. Any corrections will be happily accepted and, on verification, incorporated.

Erik (FL-c) led all front courters in scoring. Salegi (H) led all back courters.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Summary: Week 1--Oct. 7-8, 2016:  3 performances Friday 10/7 (Evening); Saturday 10/8 (Matinee); (Evening)

Erik (FL-captain led all scorers with partial or full responsibility for 34 pointsAimar (H) was second with 33. The leading back courters were Israel (DB) with 22 and Salegi (H) with 20  Leke (DB) with 21. A couple of interesting items. Aimar (H-front court) had 3 wins, 8 places, and 5 shows for the week. For the team competition he had 3, 5, and 3Arta (FL-f), who was 5,2,5 for the week, was 3,0,3 for the team competition. Diego (H-c) and Zulaika (DB-c) got off to slow starts with 8 and 7 points respectively.

Summary: Week 2--Oct. 14-15, 2016:  3 performances Friday 10/14 (Evening); Saturday 10/15 (Matinee); (Evening)

Fort Lauderdale had a terrific week 2, stretching its lead from 3 points to 37. It put up the biggest score of the competition so far, 58 points in the 10/14(E) performance. Dania Beach was hampered by the worst score so far, 9 points on 10/14(E). They came back very well in the last two performances to move into 2nd place. Hollywood could score only 70 points for the entire weekend, dropping from 2nd to 3rd. Leading scorer for the week and the competition was Erik (FL-c) (38 and 72). Leading back courters for the week were Manex (FL) and Yeche (DB) with 23Leke (DB) (39) leads back courters for the tournament. Diego (H-c) had a very productive week after his slow 1st week, with 27 points (35 total), second only to Erik for the week. Zulaika (DB-c) had a second slow week in a row, with only 10 points (17 total). The fact that DB is in second place in spite of their one awful performance and slow start of their captain can be seen as a positive for them.

Summary Week 3: October 21-22. 3 performances. Friday, Oct. 21 (Evening), Saturday Oct. 22 (Matinee); Saturday Oct. 22 (Evening)

Team: By the end of the first performance (10/21(E)) Dania Beach had sliced Fort Lauderdale's overall lead from 37 to 10 points. Their early game players roared out with 4 straight wins along with a place and two shows in the first 4 games. FL answered with 2 places and a show in the same 4 games. The two teams equaled each other in the second performance (10/22(M)), but then in the last performance (10/22(E)), FL got 16 of those points back, with wins in the last 6 games, along with 1 place and 1 show. In those last 6 games, Dania Beach took all the 2nd places except for one. Hollywood was basically shut out of those games, finishing on a downward spiral that left them 61 points off the lead, and 26 points behind FL. Hollywood's 103 points for the weekend was the second most for any weekend in the tournament so far.

Individual: Erik (c-FL) had another stellar week. He was in the middle of his team's huge run on Saturday night, claiming 3 of the 6 wins. His 5 wins for the weekend got him to 100 points, the first player to get there. He leads second place Leke (DB) by 32 points.  Leke got the most points for the weekend, with 29. Erik was second with 28. Diego (c-H) continued moving up, and now leads his team in scoring, and is 3rd overall with 57 points. Zulaika (c-DB) improved, scoring almost as many points over the weekend as he had in the first two weeks combined.

Summary Week 4: October 28-29. 3 performances. Friday, Oct. 28 (Evening), Saturday, Oct. 29 (Matinee); Saturday Oct. 29 (Evening)

Team: Last week it was Dania Beach chasing Fort Lauderdale. This week it was Hollywood. It didn't start that way. On Friday night, FL shot out of the blocks with 3 wins and 7 "in the money" finishes in the first five games, increasing their 26 point lead to 43. Dania Beach had a rocky night with only 20 points, but Hollywood quietly stayed with FL (for the night if still far behind for the tournament). Hollywood had a tremendous Matinee on Saturday with 43 points, picking up 19 points on DB and 20 on Fort Lauderdale. The teams played to a standoff on Saturday Evening (separated by 7 points for the performance). When it was all over FL had actually added 13 points to its overall lead (26 to 39) but Hollywood was the real winner, getting back into the competition. While still in 3rd place (they climbed into 2nd during the early games Saturday Evening but then fell back), they cut their deficit from 61 to 48. And they are now 9 points out of 2nd place, after being 35 points in arrears after last week's play. Hollywood's early gamers played a crucial role, with 7 wins and 14 ITMs for the 3 performances.

Individual: Aimar (H-f) led all scorers with 28 points. He was part of a trio of Hollywood front courters who scored over 20 points this week (Arbe--23, and Diego-c--22 were the others). Diego now has 79 points for the competition.   Between them they accounted for 11 wins and 20 ITMs for the three performances. Leading back courter for the week  was Urturan-H with 24 points. Ibon-H and Urbieta-FL had 20. Erik (FL-c) scored 18 points, his first time under 20 in this competition. His 118 points leads second place Aimar by 35 points. Leke (DB), despite a slow week, still leads all back courters with 73 points, 6 more than Urbieta. Zulaika (DB-c) also had a slow week, with only 10 points, to give him 42 for the competition.

Summary Week 5: November 4-5. 3 performances. Friday, Nov. 4 (Evening), Saturday, Nov. 5 (Matinee); Saturday Nov. 5 (Evening)

Team: Hollywood passed Dania Beach like a race car going past a 53 foot semi-trailer truck, turning their 9 point deficit into a 39 point lead. They are now looking to pass Fort Lauderdale for the overall lead. Two weeks ago, Hollywood languished in last place, 61 points off the lead. At the end of play on Oct. 5 (which was the end of the 5th week and the half-way point in the tournament), they trailed FL by 19 points. DB is in third after a poor week in which they scored only 67 points, the lowest weekly output of the tournament so far. Hollywood had the best week of anyone so far, with 115 points. Their depth in both front court and back (3 players with more than 70 points in each) meant that they prospered in spite of a poor week by their captain (see below, under individual). FL is heavily dependent on their captain (also see below) and it looks like he will need more help if they are to hold on to their lead. Hollywood blew the competition apart in the first performance on Friday night, with 53 points (the most for any performance so far), outscoring FL by 31 and DB by 38. FL made a comeback in the Saturday Matinee, lead by their captain's 4 victories in 4 starts in the last 5 games, but Hollywood made up most of what they lost with a solid Saturday Evening performance. DB has now had 2 poor weeks in a row. Hollywood had 39 ITMs in the 30 games. FL had 30 and DB had 21.

Individual: Aimar (H-f) led all scorers for the second week in a row with 35 points. Erik (FL-f-c) was second with 32. Larrea (H-b) led back court scorers with 25 points. He doubled his season total.  Chasio (H-b) was second with 24. At the halfway point in the tournament, Erik leads all scorers with 150 points. Aimar is 2nd with 118. Leke (DB-b) leads all back courters with 88 points. Urbieta (FL-b) and Salegi (H-b) are 2nd with 76. Hollywood is starting to show great depth, with 3 front courters (Aimar, Diego-c (83) and Arrieta (71)) and 3 back courters (Salegi (76), Urturan (75) and Chasio (70)) with 70 or more points. In Deigo's case, he is 4th in overall scoring in spite of book end 1st and 5th weeks that yielded a total of 12 points. As for DB, they are still waiting for Zulaika's (f-c) (56pts) engine to turn over.

Summary Week 6: November 11-12. 3 performances. Friday, Nov. 11 (Evening), Saturday, Nov. 12 (Matinee); Saturday Nov. 12 (Evening)

Team: Last week Hollywood passed Dania Beach to move into second place. This week in the 4th game on Friday Evening, they passed Fort Lauderdale to move into first place. They kept right on going, establishing a 29 point lead by the end of play Saturday Evening. After Week 3 they were buried in last place, 61 points behind FL. 3 consecutive 100 point weeks, including the two highest scoring weeks of the tournament in the last two weeks, have catapulted them into the lead. Last week they were led by their early gamers (G1-5), outscoring FL 29-3 and 30-4 in the first two performances. Fort Lauderdale had a disastrous 66 point weekend, the lowest output of any team for the tournament so far. Their imbalance in the front court is becoming a glaring weakness, their captain scoring almost 100 points more than any of their other front men. Dania Beach finally got some scoring out of their captain and received an excellent week from one of their other front men (see below), but a promising weekend (70 points in the two evening performances) was sabotaged by an 18 point total in the Saturday Matinee, leaving them 67 points behind the new leaders.

Individual: The silver lining in Dania Beach's cloud was Ithurria (f), who had 35 points in the three performances. Salegi (H-b) was 2nd with 27, and Arbe (H-f) 3rd with 26. At the end of 6 weeks, Eric (FL-f-c) leads all scorers with 175 points. Aimar (H-f) is 2nd with 141. Salegi (H) took over the back court lead with 103 points, 2 ahead of Leke (DB)Diego (H-f-c) had another ordinary week, but his 3 excellent weeks still have him as second leading front courter on his team in spite of his 3 slow ones. Zulaika (DB-f-c) had his first 20 point weekend of the campaign. His team will need much more of the same to fight its way back into contention.

Summary Week 7: November 18-19. 3 performances: Friday Nov. 18 (Evening), Saturday, Nov. 19 (Matinee), Saturday Nov. 19 (Evening)

Team: Hollywood increased its lead from 29 to 53 points over Fort Lauderdale. Their 4th consecutive 100 point weekend  (double the number of 100 point weekends of the two other teams combined) led the way. Hollywood had 15 wins over the weekend (12 in the 2 Saturday performances), Fort Lauderdale 8, and Dania Beach 7. What was telling was how Hollywood's late gamers stretched the lead in the last 5 games of the Saturday Evening performance. They scored 27 points (4 wins, 2 places, 1 show) to Fort Lauderdale's 7 and Dania Beach's 11. Fort Lauderdale had sliced their deficit from 29 to 16 on the back of a 36 point performance on Friday Evening, but lost 7 points in the Matinee on Saturday. They were then devastated by a 16 point performance Saturday Evening when Hollywood had their best performance of the weekend with 46. Dania Beach fell from 67 to 94 points behind.

Individual: Arrieta (H-f) led all front courters with 26 points. He led Hollywood's charge late Saturday night with 4 wins and a show. Foronda (FL-f) had 25. In the backcourt the man who is becoming the surprise of the tournament, Salegi (H) led all scorers with 30 points. His teammate Chasio had 24. For the tournament the leading front courters are Erik (FL-c) with 195, and Aimar (H)  with 150. Salegi (H) leads all back courters with 133. Leke (DB), who has had 3 slow weeks in his last 4, is still second with 112. Hollywood has 5 100 point scorers (Arrieta (f) 116, Diego (f-c) 114, and Chasio (b)108 in addition to the ones listed above). No other team has more than 3.  Zulaika (DB-f-c) is the only captain with less than 100 points. His second good week in a row brought him to 95.

Summary Week 8: November 25-26, 3 performances: Friday Nov. 25 (Evening), Saturday Nov. 26 (Matinee), Saturday Nov. 26 (Evening)

Team: When Hollywood's  front courters began the Friday Evening performance by outscoring Fort Lauderdale 29-9 and Dania Beach 29-7 in the first five games, thereby moving 73 points ahead of FL and 116 ahead of DB, it looked like the tournament might be over. However, FL fought back hard in the second half of the performance to get back 15 points of what they'd lost. They might have made up more if not for a pivotal win of a grueling 9pt G9 by Hollywood's Diego-Ibon. At the end of the night, FL had clawed back to within 58 of Hollywood. And it got better for Fort Lauderdale in the Saturday Matinee when they outscored Hollywood 45-23, scoring in every game, winning 6 of them and being in the money 13 times in the performance. They took great advantage of the performance where Hollywood had only two teams/players per game. The lead was down to 36. And on Saturday Evening Hollywood's slump continued, even though they again had three teams/players per game. They closed with only 17 points to leave the door wide open, but Fort Lauderdale couldn't take advantage. Saddled with only 2 teams/players per game, they could only make 22 points, shaving the lead to 31. Saturday Evening belonged to Dania Beach, who, led by their Captain's amazing 5 wins  (see below) scored 51 points, by far their best performance of the tournament, and the third best performance overall. It counterbalanced their 9 point performance on Friday Evening, tying their own record for worst performance of the tournament (originally set in Week 2--October 14), the performance where they only had 2 teams/players per game. Still they picked up 19 points overall, closing to within 95 of Hollywood and 64 of Fort Lauderdale. Hollywood's 2 performance slump has opened the door for FL. Can they kick it in?

Individual: This week's leading player was Zulaika (DB-f-c), who scored 39 points after being shut out in the Friday Evening performance. The 39 points (28 of which came in a 5 win effort on Saturday Evening)  were the most by any player in the tournament, exceeding Erik's (FL-f-c) 38 points in Wk 2. The leading back courter was Yeche (DB), who partnered with his Captain on Saturday evening, getting 4 wins in the performance. He had 32 points for the weekend. Diego (H-f-c) had a solid week, scoring 21points, and being in the money 7 times. Erik leads the tournament in scoring with 213 points, the first to go over 200. The leading back courter is Hollywood's Salegi, with 154 points. In an interesting development, with both Xabat and Betia out of action for DB, Elgazabal played the entire weekend in the front court.

Summary Week 9: December 2-3, 3 performances:  Friday Dec. 2 (Evening), Saturday Dec. 3 (Matin ee), Saturday Dec. 3 (Evening)

Team: For Week 9 I thought it would be interesting to try something different for a summary. Rather than go through a narrative, the idea is that numbers are worth a thousand words. This week I will simply present the actual scoring game by game. If you look below at the team standings and start from Week 8 totals, you can actually see how Hollywood's lead expanded and then contracted over the weekend. When Fort Lauderdale made their big run on Saturday Evening (see especially G3-6 when Hollywood was shut out), they cut their deficit by 19. Watch what happens in G7-10. Urtaran, Diego-Ibon, and Arrieta stopped the slump in its tracks, adding 1 point to the lead. The other thing to watch is the effect having 2 posts per game has on the outcome of the performance. For Hollywood and FL it was a tremendous effect. For Dania Beach, not so much.

There was a post on Tiger's Chalk Talk Discussion Board  about the possibility of the final round of the tournament doubling the points for each game. If that is the case, then the final round would be a playoff rather than a round. I believe the teams should be handicapped by their standing going into a playoff. Since there is no such thing as a "home court" advantage, the handicap should be number of opportunities. Throughout the season, each team has 80 opportunities (posts) for each weekend. 3-3-2 is rotated through each team. But in such a playoff, it would only be fair to give Hollywood 90 opportunities (3-3-3), Fort Lauderdale 80 (3-3-2), and Dania Beach 70 (2-2-3). Otherwise the "regular season" loses all meaning, in my opinion. I don't know if the double points system will be used or not. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Update on the update: According to the entries posted for this coming week, there will be no handicapping. It will be the usual 3-3-2 rotation, with Hollywood having 2 entries in each game of the Friday Evening performance, and Fort Lauderdale having 2 in the Saturday Evening performance.

Individual: Goitia (FL) and Zulaika (DB-c) led all front courters this weekend with 25 points. For Zulaika, it was a second consecutive weekend of 25 points or more and finally put him into the lead of his own team's depleted front court scoring. Again Betia and Xabat did not play, forcing Elgazabal into the front court. The back courters were led again by Salegi (H) with 31 points. From week 6-9 he has scored over 30 points twice. He is making a very good case, in my opinion, for player of the tournament. Look at 12/2 (E) performance (above). Hollywood knew they had to capitalize on their post advantage over FL. Salegi won (by himself or with help) the first 4 games, setting the tone for the entire weekend. Leading scorer in the tournament is still Erik (FL-f-c) with 228 points, though he had (for him) a slow weekend. Leading back courter is Salegi with 185. Diego (H-f-c) had an ordinary weekend, but one of his victories was part of Hollywood's great "goal line stand" on Saturday evening (see Team summary above).
