Pala--Kirol Txartela Masters Tournament cumulative scores and tables--Round 2

The keeping of cumulative scores and tables for tournaments is done here when the official organization that sponsors the tournament does not do so during the tournament. It is done so that interested fans can look at how the tournament develops from beginning to end, not just the latest round and table. The Kirol Txartela Masters Tournament runs from July 6 to August 17, 2016

Fourth Day: July 27, 2016--END OF 2ND ROUND

Group A: Navarro*-Brefel defeated Necol-Andueza*  3-0 (10-8, 10-9, 10-6)

There is some confusion as to who Brefel's partner was. The InnPala website says it was Navarro, who is listed as Brefel's partner throughout the tournament. But both the InnPala twitter feed and the InnPala Fronton Facebook page say it was Lopez. It is possible one or the other site was incorrect. It is also possible that the twitter feed/facebook page was correct and Lopez played as a sub, but the team is still called "Navarro-Brefel." There is precedent for this in Remonte, where, in the recent Sagardoaren Txapleketa (Torneo Sidra), there were several substitutions during the tournament. However, the teams were named after interests in the cider trade and they stayed consistent, even to the point of substitutes wearing the name of the original player on their back. If I can find out who actually partnered with Brefel, I will put a note in this entry. For now, InnPala is treating the team as Navarro-Brefel.

Group B:  Arozena*-Ibargari defeated Ibarguren*-Imanol 3-2 (5-10, 10-1, 5-10, 10-6, 10-7)

Jai Alai/Cesta Punta--SPEED 2 and the courage of Txabi Inza

Donibane Lohizune (Saint-Jean-de-Luz) Internationaux Cesta Punta Master 2 Final: Olha-Minnvielle defeated Egiguren-Inza 2-0 (15-12, 15-12)

Full match video

As all of you know by now, I am a bit obsessed with the speed of Jai Alai (see the SPEED article linked to from the Coupe-de-France Post on the main blog). No one needs to make wild claims about 150 mph, etc. The normal average speed of the game is awesome enough. No other ball game comes close. I was a little puzzled when I watched the 1st Coupe de France semi-final a couple of weeks ago. Curveur threw a couple of long rebotes at 167kph (104mph) and 163 (101). The fastest of 97 clocked speeds. Tambourindeguy's 142 and 143 (88 and 89) were the slowest. Almost everything else clocked came in at around 150 (93). Seemed a pretty fast average speed to me.

In the Master 2 final they didn't start clocking speeds until early in the second set. They clocked 23 throws. Unfortunately, 21 of them were by the back courters, so not much of a sense of front court speed. In any event, here are the findings.

Front--

Egiguren 174kph (108mph) on a serve. He was serving a little harder than he normally does, trying to protect Inza (more on that later).

Olha--170 (106) on a hard return cortada of an Egi cortada that split the defense and won a point.

Back--

Most of these were on the beautiful underhand scoops that they throw. I don't know what the throw is called but it is always beautiful to watch. I wish they had clocked overhand and sidearm throws from the back but they didn't.

Minvielle--188 (117) (He was between the 11 and 12 line when he threw this). All the rest were from deeper. 185 (115), 183 (114), 3 at 182 (113), 3 at 181 (112), 178 (111). Avg: 182.3 (113.3)

Inza--188 (117), 184 (114), 3 at 183 (114), 182 (113), 4 at 181 (112), 178 (111). Avg: 182.3 (113.3)

So for the hard throws we can't say too much about the front guys except the throws clocked didn't seem terribly exceptional. For the back guys, average: 113mph. So the whole game, except for dejadas (between maybe 5 and 10) and desparate saves (same, maybe a couple more), AVERAGE speed (conservatively estimating for front courters) between 100 and 115mph. And of course, these aren't the fastest guys. I don't know how fast Goikoetxea was throwing his cortada at Zumaia. But it seemed quite a bit faster than Olha in the match two nights before.

A word about Txabi Inza. He appeared to jam his foot into the bottom of the back wall, turning his ankle pretty severely during the 4-3 point in the first set. He left for about 15 minutes (this was edited out of the Youtube version but was in the Daily Motion live feed). When he came back it was pretty clear he was playing on one leg. He made a lot of mistakes. But he also threw two beautiful chulas (1 in each set), threw at the speeds listed above, and they lost the match 15-12, 15-12. Egiguren did everything he could, played way further back than normal, but it was a bridge to far. You could hear Inza scold himself for some of his mistakes, but the fact that he played at all on one leg was an amazing profile in courage.

And by the way, Olha showed no signs of the Goikoetxea cortada that hit him on the hip in the Zumaia match. For a guy I thought was a 36 year old filler, he has played some great Jai Alai this summer.

Jai Alai/Cesta Punta--Cumulative match records for all participants in both Internationaux Cesta Punta and Jai Alai World Tour Summer Partidos--after 3 tournaments

In this space we will keep a cumulative accounting of the records of all of the players in both the Internationaux Cesta Punta and Jai Alai World Tour competitions. Many of these players are playing in both competitions and it will be interesting to track how they do over the course of the Summer partido season. The table will be updated periodically, after the conclusion of tournaments. Separate tables will be kept for front and back courters. Rank on the table will be determined by match winning percentage. Ties will be broken first by set winning percentage, and then, if necessary by point winning percentage. For purposes of this table, winning a third set will be counted as 1/3 of a set, as third sets are played to only 5 points. Jai Alai/Cesta Punta--Coupe de France--SPEED

Semi-Final: June 30, 2016

Curveur-Ihitsague defeated Tambourindeguy-Minvielle 2-1 (15-8, 6-15, 5-3)

Full match video

During the point that began at 4-1 C-I in the first set (9 minutes 30 seconds on the recording), a small number dropped below the scorebox. "151". I hardly noticed at first. But then small numbers started dropping below the scorebox with regularity. I made a note to watch the match again and didn't pay much attention to these numbers on the first viewing. On the second viewing all I could watch were the small numbers. They were kilometers per hour, the speed of the throws before they hit the wall.

Jai Alai/Cesta Punta is well known for its sometimes extravagant claims of being the fastest ball sport in the world. It has been claimed that the fastest Jai Alai throw was 302 kph (188 mph). But does this one throw tell us that Jai Alai/Cesta Punta is the fastest ball sport in the world? Of course not.

A few years ago, I watched a Jai Alai match in the South Basque that was televised on EITB. They clocked some of the throws. The fastest I saw was by the great back courter Imanol Lopez. He was throwing the ball over 200 kph (124.3 mph) with some regularity. He topped out, if memory serves, at 203 kph (126 mph). Unfortunately, the match is no longer available for viewing.

But does even this tell us that Jai Alai is the fastest ball sport in the world? Professional men's tennis serves are not even counted among the fastest unless they are a minimum of 225 kph (140 mph). The fastest badminton smash in competition was 332 kph (206 mph) at one time and has been surpassed since. Of course, they don't use a ball in badminton.

Top speeds do not really answer the question of what is the fastest ball sport in the world. The second time I watched this match, I watched for the speeds and tried to take down as many as I could. Canal+ didn't clock every throw. There are deliberately slow throws in Jai Alai (dejada's and desparate saves come to mind). So that all has to be taken into account. I counted 97 throws that were clocked, seemingly randomly, and quite a few more from front courters than back. There may have been throws that I missed. Jai Alai moves quickly.

That said, the fastest throw I saw clocked was a Curveur long rebote (rebound shot off the back wall). 167 kph (104 mph). He also had a rebote at 163 kph (101 mph). The slowest throws I saw clocked were two by Tambourindeguy: 142 and 143 kph (88 and 89 mph). Most throws in Jai Alai are "fast" throws. Of the 97 throws I saw clocked, 76 were between 149 and 151 kph (92.6 and 93.8 mph). Amazingly, 49 were clocked at 150 kph (93.2 mph). Certainly some "fast" throws were slower. But just as certainly, some "fast throws" were faster. What I came away from this exercise with was the realization that Jai Alai, on average, for this match, was played at 150 kph (93.2 mph). Note that this was an early match at the beginning of the Basque summer partido season. These are good players who throw the ball hard. But there are better players who throw the ball harder. 93.2 mph for throws, on average. Watch any Jai Alai match and you will see the percentage of fast throws. It is a very large percentage of a very large number of throws. Keep that in your mind the next time you watch a tennis match, a baseball game (hits and throws) or even a badminton match.

One other thing that is quietly astonishing. To my knowledge there has been no noticeable change in ball or cesta (basket) technolgy at this level in Jai Alai in the last century. If I am incorrect about this, please let me know.

Remonte--Links to other Urriza-Uterga matches

A query of Urriza v Uterga matches at the Oriamendi2010 match database going back to July of 2015 retrieves 26 matches with full scores. Urriza has won 14, Uterga 12. These are not all the matches they have played against each other, as the match database is incomplete. But what it does reveal is that this is a tremendous rivalry. Seeing a couple of their matches whets the appetite for more. So here are a few more available matches between the two. Source for all is EITB. If you are interested, watch them as soon as you can, as there is no guarantee that they will be available at EITB's on demand site.

1. July 11, 2015. San Fermin Torneoa Doubles Final, at Euskal Jai Berri Fronton, Huarte. Urriza-Barrenetxea IV 40, Uterga-Exteberria III 39

Remonte--Enhanced linescore, basic statistics, and analysis of the match

Uterga-Aizpuru III defeated Urriza-Zaldua 35-25 at Beloki Fronton (1) (2), Zumarraga, in the final of the Gipuzkoako Foru Aldundiaren 2016ko Saria-VII Erremonte Kopa.

Full match video: Match begins at 1 hour, 6 minutes, 30 seconds of the recording. (Source: EITB).

The first thing that you will notice is that this match was played on a short court (mur a gauche). This court looked very short to me, as it ended just past the 10 line, whereas many 36 meter courts have an 11 line. Pala is often played on short courts (see the videos in the blog regarding the recently concluded Bizkaia Open, for example), but this was my first experience of a Remonte match on such a court. I often wondered about which sport the ball moved faster in. I don't think there is any question about that after watching this match.

Since there were no linescores or statistics presented for the match, I created some of my own. As always, my judgments as to winners and errors are my own. Yours may be different. Let this be a point of departure. I tended to be a little more forgiving than I usually am, because at this speed on a court this small, I sometimes find it a miracle that anyone can return anything.

Watching Urriza and Uterga was similar to what it always is. An incredibly entertaining way to spend an hour, watching two of the very best front courters in Remonte compete. Urriza's power (with a good deal of touch) against Uterga's finesse and use of every inch of the court (and many inches off it) and walls. In this match there were audible "oohs" and "aahs" for some of Urriza's more powerful cortadas. Some of those shots seemed to go right through cestas. But Uterga was also able to handle some of them. And he has some of the most effective two wall shots and high shots that land low on the back wall that you will see. Ironically, in this match, neither player was the difference maker. The difference maker was Aizpuru III. As the enhanced linescore below shows, at 21-19 U-A, this was a tense, hotly contested match. This is where Aizpuru III took over the match. Of the final 14 points his team scored, he scored 9 (including 3 service aces). He was all over the court. In the point that began at 25-20, he found himself in the front and Uterga in the back. He scored from the front. In this sequence he did not make an error. And, he outscored his partner for the match, something very few back courters do when they partner with Uterga. The match was followed by a very nice post-match ceremony celebrating all of the contestants in the opening Mano amateur final and this match.

Enhanced linescore:

Paleta--First impressions of Paleta Gomme Cruese on both trinquet and mur a gauche courts (with video example of mur a gauche

Paleta has several modalities. One of them is called Paleta Gomme Creuse. See the modalities page on the right side of the updates blog for the specifics of Paleta Gomme Creuse.

Women's final:

Leiza-Graciet defeated Halsouet-Comet 2-1 (14-15, 15-10, 10-7)

Men's Final:

Laxalde-Guillenteguy defeated Lissar-Bidegain 2-1 (10-15, 15-11, 10-8).

The best place to watch all of the video from these matches is Ustream, (click on "videos" to reveal all 6 videos) where they were orignally live streamed and have been made available on demand.

I had never seen a Paleta Gomme Creuse match played anywhere before these matches. The first thing I noticed was the lack of crash helmets, because the small hollow rubber pelota is not considered a possibly lethal projectile, as are the much harder leather pelotas of other modalities. I also noticed the size and very wide surface area of the paleta, compared to other modalities. But as with other Paleta varieties, the sound was unique. The architecture of the paleta makes for more control and, ultimately, longer rallies. It is a game of finesse more than strength, but also a game of speed and fitness. And on the trinquet, with all of its ornamentations, it is great fun to watch the pelota fly all over the place.

Paleta Gomme Cruese is also played on the 30 meter short court (mur a gauche), a court which is also explained on the modalities page. For an excellent example of that, see the Championnat de France men's National A singles final, contested March 19, 2016 at La Sablier FrontonLa Hallian. The competition page at pelotelive.free.fr  provides context. The final match page provides two full match videos, one filmed from the front, the other from the back. One is at the beginning of the commentaries. The other is at the end. On the mur de gauche court, practitioners as good as these finalists can make the ball move very fast. Both had great quickness and regularly needed to chase down balls at each end of the court. Because they had no partners to help them, the athleticism of these players was tested a lot. To see how they did with these challenges, enjoy the video.

Pucheux defeated Suzanne 2-1 (12-15, 15-12, 10-8).

Pala--Kirol Txartela Masters Tournament cumulative scores and tables--Round 1

The keeping of cumulative scores and tables for tournaments is done here when the official organization that sponsors the tournament does not do so during the tournament. It is done so that interested fans can look at how the tournament develops from beginning to end, not just the latest round and table. Pala--Bizkaia Open--Match summary, joko linescores analyzed, a much closer match than the final score indicate

Final:

Necol--Ibai-Perez defeated Zubiri--Imanol 3-1 (10-6, 5-10, 10-8, 10-9) at Bizkaia (Bilbo (Bilbao)) on June 18, 2016

Full Match Video (Source: EITB) Match begins at 1 hour, 6 minutes, 36 seconds on the recording.

This was a match that was much closer than the score indicated. It could easily have gone 5 jokos. Or the team the lost could have just as easily won in 4.  When it was over, Zuberi-Imanol, who had won all 7 of their matches going into this one, had their winning streak ended.

Line Scores (winner of the match listed 1st)

Joko 1: 1-0; 1-1; 3-1; 3-3; 4-3; 4-4; 7-4; 7-5; 8-5; 8-6; 10-6 N--I-P
Joko 2: 1-0; 1-5; 2-5; 2-6; 5-6; 5-10 Z-I
Joko 3: 3-0; 3-3; 5-3; 5-4; 6-4; 6-8; 10-8 N--I-P
Joko 4: 2-0; 2-1; 5-1; 5-2; 7-2; 7-5; 8-5; 8-9; 10-9 N--I-P

Note that the largest run in the match was 5 points (Joko 2). The serve changed hands 29 times. The total point match score was 35-33 N--I-P. And yet they were able to win the match in 4 jokos.

Front Courters

Necol: 14 eginaks, 9 galduaks;  Zubiri: 6, 8

Back Courters

Ibai-Perez: 5, 7; Imanol 11, 8

Note the mirror image scoring of the two teams. Imanol had a big day and kept his team in the game repeatedly, with excellent winners (for a breakdown of the types of winners see the full match video recording starting at 2 hours, 8 minutes, 30 seconds and going to 2:09;37, just preceding the post-match ceremony). The ratio of e-g's were almost the same for front and back courters. And the match played just as competitively as the statistics indicated.

It was a match that featured some stupendous points: Joko 1: point beginning at 7-5 consumed 38 balls in play. Joko 2: point beginning at 2-1 consumed 33. Joko 3: point beginning at 2-0 consumed 49, the longest point of the match. In total 16 points consumed over 10 balls in play. I have not researched which modalities average the largest number of balls in play per point, the largest numbers for any point, or what the average topcoding for balls in play would be. I suspect that this brand of Pala would not be highly ranked for any of these. Errors occur with some regularity in Pala matches. Controlling where you hit the ball with the bat Pala players use is extremely difficult. Keeping the ball in play in a match of this significance; knowing when not to go for winners; accuracy and playing within oneself; getting to balls which one shouldn't be able to get to (which all four players did magnificently); all are marks of excellent play. There was a lot of excellent play in this match.

If there was a turning point, it came in the third set, when N--I-P were able, with a little help from a Zubiri mistake, to overcome an 8-6 deficit to win. That might have broken many teams. It looked for a while like it would break Z-I. Down 7-2 in the 4th Joko, they roared back to take a 9-8 lead. But the effort was just short and N--I-P were able to take the last 2 points to win the match. I was disappointed. I wanted another Joko. Pala is an incredibly compelling game when it is played at this level.

Main Nue--Trophee de la Rune--Match Summary and Comparison between singles Mano and Main Neu

Full Match Video (Source: Esku Pilota Youtube site)

Note: as always, when I judge winners and errors, as opposed to pointing to an official accounting of them, the judgments are completely subjective. Yours may be different. I would love any feedback that would help me judge winners and errors better.

Ducassou started this match with a bang: 4 consecutive service aces. And while some excellent play by Guichandot (6 winners and 2 aces) allowed him to close from 9-2 to 12-10, that was the closest he got. Ducassou answered this challenge with a 15 point run, and cruised home from there.  According to the scoring judgments I made, Ducassou had 35 winners (inlcuding 8 service aces) and 2 errors (including 1 service fault). Guichandut had 17 winners (including 2 service aces) and 4 errors (including 1 service fault). There was one point (the 30th point of the match, won by Ducassou to make the score 20-10) that I could not see the outcome of). So it was a remarkably error free match. Ducassou had to earn everything he got.

This match makes a fascinating comparison with the Mano singles matches discussed above. This match was between two back courters. Everyone in the tournament was a back courter.  In the San Fermin 4/12 tournament all except one of the contestants (Urrutikoetxea) was a front courter. In the Buruz Buruko Txapelketa front courters dominated the proceedings. I am not sure, but I suspect this has everything to do with the different geographies of the courts. The back courters are much more quick and mobile, for the most part, in Main Neu than in Mano. Various strategies have to be worked out. In the Buruz Buruko a single, brutal, and constant strategy of power was applied (until the last match) for victory by Irribarria because he knew that front courters wouldn't have the range to play from deep in the court. In the San Fermin, more subtle strategies are applied, but they basically apply to a half-court game.  In the Trophee de la Rune final, we saw both power and finesse. The whole court is in use and can be used offensively or defensively. It's a fascinating comparison and you may disagree, but it makes for very interesting watching.
