This was a classic youth-power v experience-finesse match. A-S have played in the last 5 consecutive CDF National A finals in this modality (Source: FFPB competitions-resultats and pelotelive.free.fr), This was their 4th win in that span. They were on the back foot for much of the match, after leading 1-0. They trailed 3-11 early on in the match. Their largest deficit was 16-27 and 17-28. Laberdesque dominated the match early. But A-S never panicked, never screamed in frustration or tossed a paleta. They played with cool intellect and very slowly worked their way back into the match. Both players seemed always to be in the right spot at the right time. Their shot making ability (Amestoy's deadly accuracy in front and Suzanne's long range right wall shots) and great Suzanne defense began to take their toll. After their long uphill battle to equality and then a 36-35 lead, they again fell behind 36-37. What followed was classic clutch play. Beautiful winners by Suzanne, Amestoy, Suzanne, and Amestoy closed out yet another CDF for S-A. L-H played extremely well also. Only in the 7th decade, by my scoring, did they slightly crack under the pressure, with 3 errors. In the end it was the experience, intelligence, calmness under pressure, and execution of the champions that made the difference.

Pasaka--LPPB (Ligue Pelote Pays Basque) Premier Series Quarter-final.--Details of the match
This match was 1 of 4 quarter-final matches in the LPPB Premier Pasaka
Competition, which began on November 13, 2016 and will end with a final
on February 5, 2017. It was played on January 15, 2017.

I think the best way to learn a modality is to watch a match closely, and score it point by point. In amateur matches the video can be of excellent quality, but certain things that you would expect watching a sporting event may be missing. An excellent example is a scoreboard. Scoreboards, either photographed at the venue or used as a video aid, are the basic context of every sporting event. In amateur Basque Pelota matches, very often there is no scoreboard. But one of the traditions of BP is the calling out of the score. In some cases the singing out of part of it. In this match, the score is called out very clearly, point by point, in both Basque and French. However, another of the landmarks that help anyone follow a ball and court sport, the serve (who has it and when), and the order of the score, are something that fans simply take for granted as context aids.Without these landmarks as context aids, it is much more difficult to decipher what is going on. I was able to figure out Pasaka scoring by watching the match carefully. But it took a while.
Pasaka is a "direct" BP sport, that is to say, there is no front wall. Players or teams face each other across a net. In most "direct" sports one side serves until the game is over.
In Pasaka there is no serve to start a point. All points are started from one side of the court. The team that starts the point starts it by having one of its players (I have never seen a singles Pasaka match) toss the ball underhand so that it lands on roof of the side Trinquet dugout. The returner returns on the bounce or fly and the point is contested until one team fails to keep the point going. In Pasaka the teams switch sides in the middle of games. The way this worked for this match was that any time a team got to within a point of winning the game (4 points but you must win by 2, exactly as tennis is scored), the teams switch sides and the other team "serves." There is no "deuce" or "advantage." If a team is down 40-30 and scores to equalize, the score changes back to 30-30 (much like the Valentian Pelota sports of Raspall and Escalia e Corda). For long games, like the 20th game of this match, each time "deuce" became "advantage", the teams switched sides. This can become very confusing very quickly and has a tendency to lead to scoring errors, which is why I'm not going to give you complete point by point scoring.
Pasaka matches are basically played to 13 games. This was a very competitive match. Watch and enjoy.

Scoring: Note that scoring is completely subjective. My cardinal rule is that a close scoring call will always be a winner (+) rather than an error (-). Calling a close one a winner makes two players happy. Calling it an error makes 2 players angry. I have never played Pasaka. I use my own judgement plus players' body language to help me. One team's winners plus their opponents' errors will always add to that team's final score. In this case the scores were 1 off the final total point score because in Game 18 the judge gave a point to the wrong team. It was a clear mistake that both teams recognized and questioned. It also got the team that was awarded the point to within one point of winning the game, which precipitated a side switch. The mistake stood. I gave no point for the mistake. It looked to me like the team that benefited from the mistake deliberately lost the next point. Such are the vagaries of amateur competitions. You can judge for yourself below.
Note that I am assuming player positions are given back court player first (the only BP modality that lists them in this order) based on the player positions given for the only other Pasaka match I've seen, which is linked to in the main article. My apologies to all players if that is incorrect.

In this match, Urrunarrak jumped off to a lead that got as big as 6-2 before SPI began their first comeback. Both times they got close (7-6 and 11-9), Urrunarrak pulled away. There were perhaps 2 turning points in this match. The first came in Game 2 when SPI couldn't hold a 40-15 lead. Urrunarrak won 5 of the next 6 points to turn a likely 1-1 match score into 2-0. That game was pulled back by a great block shot by Ussaralde, a large man who doesn't look like an athlete but is an excellent one, in the manner of Mickey Lolich or Bartolo Colon in American baseball. When Ussaralde blocks, he blocks hard. At times I expected the ball to disintegrate. It didn't but such power surely impressed his opponents. For the game he had 5 winners, 4 of which were blocks. It set a tone for the match. The second turning point came after the mammoth 20th game, finally won 10-8 by SPI (their 3rd straight game), cutting their match deficit to 11-9. Another team might have wilted. SPI went ahead in Game 21 15-0. Then came Ussaralde. He made the block of the match to tie the score and then two more to win the game. Two more blocks in Game 22 sent his team into the semi-finals of this competition.
Just for fun, and to illustrate how difficult a point by point accounting for this sport is, here is Game 20, to the best of my ability.

Main Nue: Cedric Lucu, 17 winners, point by point
Tournois Ossau Iraty Final:
Aguirre-Lazcano defeated Elgart-Lucu* 40-39
Cedric Lucu, a back courter who I became aware of during this year's Coup de Chasseurs Tournament, being played at Trinquet Garat, Donibane Garazi (Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port) (1)(2) (see coverage at Main Nue recurring 50 point match results on the right side of the blog), played an outstanding match in this final.
Lucu is in the back court of the red team, the only one without a name on the back of his shirt. He had been noted for excellent play in the short summary of the CdC semi-final, but there was no match video or statistics. In this final there was match video, so I watched (3 of the players, all but Lazcano, will be featured in the CdC final) and charted the match point by point, in order to keep score, assign winners and errors, and make an enhanced linescore. I don't feel the need to reproduce the entire linescore, but Lucu played an impressive game and I thought you might like to see his highlights. He had 17 winners, a large number for a back courter, and only 1 less than his partner. He also had 5 errors, including the error that ended the game. But I think he shows great promise and that you will enjoy watching him progress.

Aguirre-Lazcano defeated Elgart-Lucu* 40-39
Cedric Lucu, a back courter who I became aware of during this year's Coup de Chasseurs Tournament, being played at Trinquet Garat, Donibane Garazi (Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port) (1)(2) (see coverage at Main Nue recurring 50 point match results on the right side of the blog), played an outstanding match in this final.
Lucu is in the back court of the red team, the only one without a name on the back of his shirt. He had been noted for excellent play in the short summary of the CdC semi-final, but there was no match video or statistics. In this final there was match video, so I watched (3 of the players, all but Lazcano, will be featured in the CdC final) and charted the match point by point, in order to keep score, assign winners and errors, and make an enhanced linescore. I don't feel the need to reproduce the entire linescore, but Lucu played an impressive game and I thought you might like to see his highlights. He had 17 winners, a large number for a back courter, and only 1 less than his partner. He also had 5 errors, including the error that ended the game. But I think he shows great promise and that you will enjoy watching him progress.

My first Xare Match
Urrunarrak is one of the clubs that plays in the Ligue de Pelote du Pays Basque Championnat du Pays Basque 2017 - Xare - 1ère série. By itself, this is not particularly noteworthy. The league has 8 other teams that are vying for a championship. However, what does make Urrunarrak unique at the moment, is that the club produces videos of its home matches. I had never seen a Xare match before I discovered their Youtube site. My first Xare match was Urrunarak v Hardoytarrak, played on October 2, 2016. The key to the game is the implement, the xare.
Because the meshwork of the racquet is so loose, putting the pelote in play is a combination of hitting and catching/throwing, somewhat, but not exactly analogous to the way the joko garbi cesta is used. And because the sport is played on a trinquet court, a short (28 meter) court with some of the ornamentations that are central to Main Nue, the pelote moves very quickly and unpredictably. The sport emphasizes quickness and finesse.
The pelote doesn't move as fast as in Jai Alai, but the game progresses tremendously fast. Even long points go very quickly. That was the first thing I noticed about the sport. 40 point matches rarely take an hour to play. The one I watched had 65 points and was played in less than 42 minutes by premier club teams. The longest point I saw took 43 seconds. It consumed 16 balls in play. I'm not exactly sure which point it was because of the difficulty keeping score. It was near the end of the match.

These two teams also played each other in the semi-finals of the 2014-15 Championnat de France on February 5, 2015. There is full match video for it as well (without sound). The video is from a different angle and a scoreboard is clearly visible, making it very useful in learning the sport. Jai Alai/Cesta Punta--Remonte--Pala-- Long court to short court trends in Jai Alai/Cesta Punta, Remonte, and Pala
It was very interesting to see Jai Alai/Cesta Punta played on a short
court. The Bizkaia Fronton is a big short court at 38 meters, but it
is still a short court. The powers that be on the Basque Country Jai Alai
scene wish to take the game to more fans. And it is a simple matter of
arithmetic. There are many more short courts than long ones. The players
are good enough to adapt their game to the different conditions.
The trend is the same for two other implement modalities, Pala and Remonte. Pala has been going toward more short court matches for some time. A couple of InnPala's up and coming stars, Dan Necol and Sylvain Brefel are from the North Basque and learned their games on short courts. Remonte also plays several summer tournaments on short courts, again in an effort to spread the game.
Before there were indoor courts there were outdoor courts (Fronton Place Libres). These have only one wall. They are much bigger than long courts, between 80 and 100 meters long. The long courts are around 54 meters long and the short courts around 36.
I thought it might be interesting to show the evolution from long to short courts with video examples for these three sports. Each of them has a "cathedral" long court (Mungia for Pala, Hernani for Remonte, and Gernika for Jai Alai).There are matches from all three below. Things to look for in these examples are the differences in speed, implements (espcially for Pala, where the Grosse/Larga bat can weigh up to 950 grams, far heavier than the corta/motza bats used on short courts), and the subtle changes in strategies that the sizes of the courts encourage. The outdoor games seem to be the most conservative, the players are not really looking for kill shots. These games emphasize power to send deep shots over and over trying to induce mistakes. As the courts get smaller the ability to kill points quickly becomes more a part of the strategy.

Jai Alai/Cesta Punta--Cumulative match records for all participants in both Internationaux Cesta Punta and Jai Alai World Tour Summer Partidos through all 11 tournaments
In this space we will keep a cumulative accounting of the records of all of the players in both the Internationaux Cesta Punta and Jai Alai World Tour competitions. Many of these players are playing in both competitions and it will be interesting to track how they do over the course of the Summer partido season. The table will be updated periodically, after the conclusion of tournaments. Separate tables will be kept for front and back courters. Rank on the table will be determined by match winning percentage. Ties will be broken first by set winning percentage, and then, if necessary by point winning percentage. For purposes of this table, winning a third set will be counted as 1/3 of a set, as third sets are played to only 5 points. Note: Txabi Inza suffered a grade 5 ankle sprain during the ICP Master 2 final,. After receiving medical treatment, he continued, playing most of that match with the injury. He will, according to JAWT, be out of action for 6 to 8 weeks. He was replaced by Nicolas Eyheragaray in Master 3 (ICP) and was scheduled to play with Ohla in the Lekeitio Master Series (JAWT) beginning July 30. He was replaced in that Master Series by Arnaud Alliez.
Eric Irastorza was injured and unable to partner with Diego Beaskoetxea in ICP Master 3. He was replaced by Unai Lekerika. Irastorza was supposed to partner with Alex Hormaetxea in ICP Master 4. He was unable to play in ICP Master 4 and was replaced by Nicolas Eyheragaray. He returned to play in (and win) the ICP SLAM competition.
Christophe Olha (groin) and Nicolas Etcheto (right bicep) were injured in non-JAWT tournaments before the 3rd place and final matches of the JAWT Lekeitio Master competition. They were replaced by Unai Alberro and David Minvielle respecitively.

Beaskoetxea-Irastorza used the last ounce of their strength and every ounce of their experience to edge Ohlaran-Lekerika in this champion of champions match, the final match of the ICP season. They had to come back from 0-2 in the tie breaker to finish the job. After the first set it didn't appear that it would be that difficult. Lekerika, in the brightest spotlight at age 21, seemed to be cracking under the pressure. His 7 errors were key to B-I's easy victory. Ahead 4-1 in the second set, B-I seemed to be cruising to an easy championship. But, as the linescore below shows, O-L battled back. Lekerika still made mistakes, but got into his rhythm and showed why he is (in my opinion) headed for greatness. The set was a battle of attrition. O-L didn't take the lead until 7-6. With each point, it seemed that B-I were tiring. The point beginning at 10-9 O-L, a grueling point that consumed 20 balls and was the second longest point of the match, seemed to drain B-I. Though they won the point, the rest of the set went quickly and badly for them. Entering the tie breaker, it seemed O-L had all the momentum. And when they took a 2-0 lead in the tie breaker, it seemed the championship was in their grasp.
Watch the last 6 points of the match and you'll see a great team, intelligent, talented, experienced, use all three of those attributes to mount its comeback. The last three points consumed 43 balls. When Beaskoetxea threw the winner that ended the match, he and Irastorza were elated and exhausted. They were also SLAM Champions for the second year in a row.

Main Nue--Turnois de Larrau--Trophee Betzula--Enhanced linescore, commentary, and some background on how Larralde and Ducassou got to this point.
Note: the match record information below is based on the Esku Pilota results pages for 2016. This may or may not be all the times Larralde and Ducassou have faced each other this year. It may or may not be all the matches they have played this year.
This match marked the end of Peio Larralde's reign at the top of the EP rankings. Baptiste Ducassou replaced him. It also marked the end of a long and often frustrating chase for Ducassou, a chase that has lasted through much of 2016. For the year, Larralde and Ducassou are now 3-3 in pairs matches they have played against each other. In championship finals, Larralde now leads Ducassou 3-1 in pairs and 1-0 in singles (the individual Championnat de France). But Ducassou has stayed close enough that this match could change the table. They are both far and away the highest ranked players.
For Larralde, it broke a 12 match winning streak that began after a loss in a Lundi Garat match on May 30 (Etchegaray-Guichandut 50, Larralde-de Ezcurra 43). He also had a tournament final winning streak of 5 snapped. For the year 2016 he is now 20-4, and 6-1 in tournament finals.
For Ducassou, the victory raised his match record for 2016 to 25-5 and his tournament final record to 5-5.

Ducassou now holds a 450 point lead over Larralde at the top of the EP rankings table. Both of them are between 4,400 and 4,800 points ahead of the third ranked player, Mathieu Ospital. To put it another way, Ospital is 5 EP 1000 tournaments behind the top two. Things can change rapidly in the course of a few tournaments, but there is a yawning gap at the moment between Ducassou/Larralde and the rest of the EP roster.

The fact that 36 of the 70 complete points on the video consumed 10 or more balls, 20 consumed 20 or more, and 10 consumed 30 or more (see balls in play-number of points table below) gives an indication of how hard fought this match was. O-D never trailed but this was perhaps a closer match than the final score indicated. The match turned on three consecutive points, the points beginning at 25-23 (49:54-51:40 on the recording), 25-24 (52:07-53:07) , and 26-24 (54:30-56:44), which consumed 41, 24, and 47 balls respectively. The first and third of these were the longest points of the match. L-D scored 7 straight points to bring the score to 25-24, with 4 Larralde winners and two services aces accounting for the the first 6. After the 49th point was terminated by a marginal error by Ospital, L-A were ready to "take the driver's seat." But it never happened. At the end of the 50th point de Ezcurra was pinned to 5th filet section from the front wall to make a return on an excellent Ospital shot. de Ezcurra had to go into the mesh and pushed off after the return. But he then hesitated and and was nowhere near the right side to cover when Ospital shot a beautiful cross court winner that beat Larralde. Larralde cried out as if he were asking de Ezurra where he was. He then truncated the cry, probably realizing the protocol he may have violated.
Whether de Ezcurra would have had any chance to get the ball is quite problematic. Judge for yourself. I think Ospital made two excellent plays to stop the bleeding and that was that.
What is amazing is that these three points took about 5 minutes to play. When they were over, O-D had re-established a three point lead. They very slowly built on that lead to the end of the match.
Long points are long because great plays are made during them. This match had its share of great plays. Ducassou continually impresses with his court coverage, speed in retreat when chasing a ball on the dugout roof, ability to play great defense off the back foot from the nether reaches of the court, and ability to put points on the scoreboard. Ospital played a great game, staying with Larralde throughout. de Ezcurra was yeoman like in defense. In the end it was Ducassou's offense that made the difference (see scoring summary below).

Jai Alai/Cesta Punta--Cumulative match records for all participants in both Internationaux Cesta Punta and Jai Alai World Tour Summer Partidos through the first 10 tournaments
In this space we will keep a cumulative accounting of the records of all of the players in both the Internationaux Cesta Punta and Jai Alai World Tour competitions. Many of these players are playing in both competitions and it will be interesting to track how they do over the course of the Summer partido season. The table will be updated periodically, after the conclusion of tournaments. Separate tables will be kept for front and back courters. Rank on the table will be determined by match winning percentage. Ties will be broken first by set winning percentage, and then, if necessary by point winning percentage. For purposes of this table, winning a third set will be counted as 1/3 of a set, as third sets are played to only 5 points. As of July 29, 2016 six championships--Hondarribia, Gernika I, Zumaia, Mutriku-Markina (World Jai Alai Tour), Master 1 and 2 (Internationaux Cesta Punta). The table also includes both the first semi-finals of Gernika II (JAWT) and Master 3 (ICP), championships that have not yet concluded.
Note: Txabi Inza suffered a grade 5 ankle sprain during the ICP Master 2 final,. After receiving medical treatment, he continued, playing most of that match with the injury. He will, according to JAWT, be out of action for 6 to 8 weeks. He was replaced by Nicolas Eyheragaray in Master 3 (ICP) and was scheduled to play with Ohla in the Lekeitio Master Series (JAWT) beginning July 30. He will be replaced in that Master Series by Arnaud Alliez.
